Lifestyle

The Flat Rock Playhouse has existed since 1937 in one place or another, starting out as the Vagabond Players. Landing in Flat Rock in 1949,  their first summer season of plays was in a 150-year-old grist mill they converted into The Old Mill Playhouse at Highland Lake. In 1952, the troupe of performers, and a newly formed board of directors, made an offer to buy an 8-acre lot in the Village of Flat Rock. This has became the new and permanent location for what we enjoy today. This is an impressive group of performers.

The Hendersonville Theater, located in Washington Street in Hendersonville, began in 1966. This troupe has also moved around a bit over the years, starting on Haywood Road and later in a large barn on State Street. In 2012 it moved to its current location, an old church on Washington Street, which allowed them to expand programming and educational workshops.

Hendersonville Symphony

2024 is the 51st season for the Hendersonville Symphony. Each year, in addition to the four Symphony Orchestra concerts at Blue Ridge Community College and two Chamber Orchestra concerts, they also perform orchestral concerts for every 3rd and 6th grader in Hendersonville, absolutely free. These programs in many cases are the first and only live professional concerts of classical music that many of these children experience. Their Youth Orchestra and Children’s Choir are open to all area students to learn from some of the most gifted musicians in the region.

The Hendersonville Community Band

The Community Band was started April 11, 1991, starting with 50 volunteers, and the rest is history . This group brings a show four times a year and for only one performance each. They are a wonderful group and you don’t want to miss them! They perform at the Blue Ridge Community College.
