As the population grows, so does the expansion of homes that are being built further and further from the town center. And with the popularity of working from home, buyers are changing the way they search for homes. Yes, buyers still want upgrades and are looking for things like open concept living and upgraded kitchens and bathrooms. But they are increasingly looking for high-speed internet and office space within the home.
Today, there is an increasing number of companies open to hiring people who work remotely. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that this past year, 24% of the workforce did their jobs from home, at least part of the time. That number went up to 42% for workers who hold advanced degrees.
Are there homes that have a dedicated home office space? Is there a room that can be shut off from the rest of the home for quiet working and phone calls? Are there plenty of plug-ins for a computer, printer and other devices?
Is there good access to the internet? Is there strong Wi-Fi access for the type of work you would do?
Traditional homes, as well as older homes, may not have the capacity to redesign for home office space. But most of the newer homes are coming with office space more often. Until then creativity is a must for those of us that work from home today. As time goes on more and more of the workforce will be at home. That will have a huge impact on how we look for homes in the future. If you are a homeowner you may want to address this now, so that when you are ready to sell, there will be a larger market for your home.
